Richard Neutra (1892–1970), an Austrian architect who had worked with Wright in the mid 1920s, later wrote Survival through Design . This is one of the pivotal books on the importance of designing with nature (Neutra 1954). In it, he advocated a holistic approach to design, giving full attention to the needs of his client while at the same time emphasizing the importance of the site (the geography of place), its natural conditions, and its surroundings.
Neutra’s book predated the environmental movement by 20 years and in many ways contributed to the formation of the Environmental Protection Act of 1970, which came into existence the same year Neutra died.
