EndNote is a reference management program that helps researchers collect, organize, and cite sources for academic writing. While Penn State does not have a university-wide license for EndNote, the desktop application is available for use on public Windows computers at University Park (Pattee Library Knowledge Commons, Sidewater Commons, and ITS computer labs). It is not available on public Macintosh computers at University Park.

The latest version of EndNote (currently EndNote 21 and above) can be purchased at an academic discount by Penn State students, faculty, and staff through General Stores or PSUbuy. The previous Software @ Penn State portal is no longer used for software purchases.

EndNote Basic (online), a web-based version with limited features, is free for all Penn State affiliates. When accessed via Web of Science, it offers enhanced citation style options and integration with library resources.

Pedagogical purposes

• Introduce EndNote to students in information literacy sessions, including how to create libraries, import references, and use Cite While You Write (CWYW)
• Promote collaboration by having students and faculty build and share EndNote libraries for joint research projects and consistent citation practices
• Assign graded or ungraded activities in which students collect and organize references with EndNote, building essential research and academic writing skills
• Streamline and standardize reference management to support accessibility and equity in student research and writing
