The CCEDIR (Capturing Classroom Engagement Data for Instructor Reflection) tool helps instructors in the Eberly College of Science enhance teaching through structured, evidence-based reflection. Developed by the Grove Center and Penn State’s Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), CCEDIR enables classroom observers to record real-time student engagement data. Instructors then review this data via clear, visual summaries, supporting targeted improvements to teaching practices and ultimately fostering greater student engagement.
- Preparation: Instructors and observers meet before class to discuss learning objectives and clarify the focus areas for observation.
- Observation: Observers use the CCEDIR app during class to unobtrusively document instructional strategies, student activities, and engagement patterns.
- Data sharing: After class, the observer sends a CSV file with the collected engagement data to the instructor.
- Reflection and analysis: Instructor and observer review the data together, using the CCEDIR app’s visual dashboards for structured reflection. All data remain private and are intended solely for the instructor’s professional growth, never for evaluation.
