In projectile motion, the vertical and horizontal motion are independent from each other but the time variable links them. The vertical motion (hitting the ground) is what usually ends the projectile motion (in the absence of an horizontal obstacle). Therefore the vertical motion is what you should use first to determine the time.

Problem Solving Video

A dart is thrown at some speed V at 45° above the horizontal, with the aim of hitting the bull's eye of a dartboard located 2.5 m away. If the dart leaves the hand of the player at a height located 20 cm below the bull's eye, at what speed V must the dart be thrown?

Here we demonstrate the "classic" problem in physics of the coconut in a tree by shooting Kenny from South Park.
