Your first exam is coming in Week 4 and will be available between 12:01am on Friday and 11:59 pm on Sunday (both in U.S. Eastern Time). If you have an emergency that comes up that would prevent you from taking the exam this week, let me know as soon as possible (ideally before Tuesday of the following week) so we can determine how to proceed. There will be one make up exam opportunity later in the semester (after the fourth exam) for students who miss an exam for a legitimate, unavoidable issue. Please note, however, that just needing more time to study, or taking a vacation is not a valid reason to miss the exam. If you know in advance that you will have an issue taking the exam, please let me know as soon as possible so we can discuss options.
There are 25 questions and the content covered on the exam will be weeks 1-3 (Chapters 1-4 in the eBook). The questions will be multiple choice and fill-in the blank. You have 75 minutes and one attempt only. If you (accidentally) close the exam, the time will continue and you will be able to enter back in until the time expires. Once the exam closes on Sunday it will not be opened up again. It will show one question at a time, but you are able to skip over questions and come back. Be sure you have answered all questions before submitting. NOTE: it gives a warning to you prior to submitting if you have any unanswered questions. Be sure you read this carefully and fully answer all questions before submitting.
The exam will be administered in Canvas. You are allowed to use a hand-held calculator (but not your phone unless on airplane mode). You may use any notes you created and a printed copy of the periodic table and data sheet. The eBook and this HAX space will be accessible as well. After 75 minutes , the exam will close. Be sure that you have answered all questions by the end. It is impossible for me to reopen an exam once you have submitted it. Please make sure that all questions are answered before submitting. Be sure to have a stable internet connection prior to starting the exam. I highly recommend that you verify that your cookies/cache are cleared and your browser updated before beginning. You will have one attempt only.
Initially, we were going to proctor the exams through Honorlock. However, after discussing the issue with the Teaching Team, we decided that we would rather have you agree to abide by the rules and principles of academic integrity and trust you than monitor you obsessively. So, in order to access the exam, you will need to complete the Academic Integrity Agreement on Canvas.
Please let me know if you have questions or concerns!
I recommend self-assessing with the course learning objectives document (on Canvas) before you dive into the practice exams. Use those when you feel you are ready to truly test yourself! There is one practice exam on Canvas. Plus, you can attempt practice exams twice on the eBook. You are strongly encouraged to ask questions on Piazza or through attending the live Help Sessions as you are preparing.
For any question you answer incorrectly on the exam, you may submit a full solution to receive partial credit. You are welcome to get help as you are working on the corrections, but your work must be your own. Your completed corrections are due by Sunday night during week 5.
In addition to preparing for and taking the exam this week, you are expected to begin discussing your ideas for the Practical Applications Project. Details for this discussion are found on Canvas.
